Love Light Review - Jessica Nagle

I recently completed The LIAs Love Light course which provides a detailed introduction to the lighting industry, something that is fairly new to me, having just recently graduated from university in Product Design.

Lighting design is, however, something I thoroughly enjoyed during my degree, having chosen to do several projects within this sector, so I was very excited to be given the opportunity to learn more about it!

The Course Overview

The course is broken down into 5 modules:

  • Module 1: Your Bright Future – this summarised the exciting opportunities and possibilities there are within the lighting industry, something that I found really inspiring.
  • Module 2: A Vital Part of Modern Life – discussed the benefits and importance of lighting in our everyday lives and why it is important it is done right.
  • Module 3: Optimising the Work Environment – discussed the benefits lighting has on productivity and well-being, which was very interesting.
  • Module 4: A Positive Response to Megatrends – this module really stood out for me as it covered some of the topics I am particularly passionate about, such as sustainability and discussing the role lighting has to align with current global issues.
  • Module 5: What Next For You? – summarised the opportunities the lighting industry has to offer, but also delved into the history of lighting, which was very engaging.
My Personal Takeaways:

One of the main aspects of the course that I really liked was finding out about the vast opportunities available within the lighting industry. Having just left university, it can feel very daunting deciding what path to go down, or even having the knowledge of how to get to certain roles. The first module in this course really broke down the different sectors within the lighting industry. I hadn’t realised quite how diverse it is! I also found it really interesting and reassuring to hear about the different routes people have taken to get to the roles they are in now as some have come from an entirely different background. As someone who has always had a variety of interests, there is so much opportunity to work towards a sector that suits you and your passions.

The course was very easy to follow, easy to read, and engaging and I really enjoyed stepping back into design mode during the course and being reinspired and encouraged to think about future possibilities.

The course also provides a very simple break-down of some of the key terminology used within the lighting industry and I found these definition summaries very useful. This course is a great tool when a quick refresher is needed. It is highly approachable and accessible as it can be completed at your own pace and time.

The discussion into Megatrends in Module 4, I found particularly interesting. The introduction to sustainability in lighting, which is something I am very passionate about, was both positive, refreshing and honest, highlighting the exciting potential for designing sustainable lighting as well as the challenges. I was left feeling positive by the role lighting can play and it really broadened my understanding of its impact and importance.
