Illuminating Success: A Q&A with Matt Burton, Managing Director of Aurora Lighting

We recently sat down with Matt Burton, Managing Be honest, be kind, keep improving 1% every day, and build connections with as many people as possible, never passing up an opportunity to network!

  1. Are there any specific skills or knowledge areas that you think are crucial for success in this industry?

I’ve always worked on the basis that if you have the will, you can learn the skill. One skill or trait I would say that is important is wanting to make a difference. Lighting as a technology makes a huge difference to people’s lives and well-being, as well as supporting sustainability goals for our planet. You don’t have to be a technical whizz, just have an openness to learn and develop.

Navigating a Competitive Professional World
  1. The professional world is increasingly competitive—what’s your best advice for surviving and thriving in such an environment?

In so many areas you get out what you put in. Put the hard yards in, take every opportunity to learn and upskill yourself, network with people as much as possible and don’t be afraid to ask for support. So many people have given me their time on my journey and I’m incredibly grateful for it. Without those who have supported me, I would not find myself where I am today.

  1. How important is networking in the lighting industry, and what are the best ways to build meaningful professional connections?

I’ve probably talked about this a lot already but get to know your customers! We are in a customer-centric world where understanding their needs is crucial – this will then open doors wider and build your network. Never think you can fully understand what a customer wants from behind a desk – go and speak to them and immerse yourself in their world. Use tools like LinkedIn to build a network of people you meet and share meaningful content to support building that network. This should never be instead of face-to-face though!

Leadership
  1. As a Managing Director, what has been the most rewarding aspect of leadership for you?

A number of people have asked me recently why I do what I do. Why push higher and take on that additional responsibility that comes with it? Some may think it’s just to earn more money and have a bigger title, but that’s not what drives me. That’s not my purpose. I’m driven by wanting to make a difference, unlock the potential of people and businesses as much as I can, and ultimately achieve successful results. This is usually a journey, but the most rewarding aspect for me is seeing the difference you’re making with people and seeing the development and growth of those around you.

  1. Do you believe leadership is something you learn on the job, or would you recommend formal leadership courses?

I believe both are important. As somebody who has never been to university and doesn’t have a degree, this doesn’t define you. Learning on the job is crucial, but if you can weave in training courses and personal development, you will always keep growing. I’ve been fortunate enough to attend some great leadership courses recently, and I’ve picked new tricks or tips up every time. When it comes to learning vs on the job, one should never be in place of the other and they should complement.

  1. What’s the best piece of leadership advice you’ve ever received, and how has it shaped your approach?

For me, it’s been about continuous improvement. I was fortunate in a previous company to attend Lean Six Sigma training and have attended courses on the topic of always moving forward. Every day, how can you make yourself, your team or your business better. Focus on small 1% improvements and they will all snowball over time. Don’t try to boil the ocean – focus on one kettle at a time!

And as somebody who loves a cliché, I’ll chuck in a couple of extra ones I like:

  • Sometimes it’s not what you do that counts, it’s how you make people feel.
  • Don’t wish it to happen, make it happen!

Future of the Industry
  1. How do you see the lighting industry evolving over the next few years? What should businesses be prepared for?

In the general lighting space, sustainability will continue to become more important, recognised and valued as we seek ways to support reducing the effects of climate change. Certification requirements are growing, and great product data will support the information needed here. Regulations will tighten, which will support those companies who invest in testing and quality. And smart lighting will continue its growth in the market, as technology evolves to make lighting simpler to control. The above is not exhaustive of course, but the first things that come into my mind.

  1. What roles do sustainability and technology play in shaping the future of the lighting industry?

They play a large role today, and this will only get bigger! As mentioned above, sustainability is a crucial topic that the importance of should rightly be heightened. There are of course a large number of different areas underneath the huge ‘sustainability’ umbrella! Technology will continue to evolve and those who don’t seek to innovate will be left behind!
