Getting into the Industry
Could you tell us how you first got into the lighting sector? What initially drew you to this industry?
I wanted to leave the teaching profession and enter an industry with a focus in emerging technologies. There was an opening at a lighting manufacturer to become a lighting designer.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced early in your career, and how did you overcome them?
I was fortunate to have very supportive managers at the start of my journey in the lighting industry. However, some co-workers did not like me giving them training due to me being significantly younger than them, but I was more technically proficient. I overcame this challenge by sharing my technical knowledge and gaining my peers trust and approval.
Looking back, would you have done anything differently in your journey into the lighting sector?
I think by starting off as a lighting designer really laid the technical foundation that I have been able to build upon during my current passage through the lighting industry. Being a lighting designer allowed me to learn the fundamentals of an LED luminaire.
Recommending the Sector
Why would you recommend the lighting industry to those considering a career in it?
There are a lot of opportunities for various roles in the lighting industry due to the current ageing workforce. With a persistent and committed attitude towards career progression openings will naturally arise.
What makes this sector unique compared to others, and what should newcomers be excited about?
Being able to light various spaces is a privilege, as it allows humans to function in places that were not easily accessible.
Advice for Those Starting Out
What advice would you give to someone just starting their career in lighting or a related field?
Make sure to engage positively with your new company and not be afraid to take on roles/responsibilities that are out of your direct job requirements.
Are there any specific skills or knowledge areas that you think are crucial for success in this industry?
Having an interest in electronics and emerging technologies will help you stay engaged in this industry. Understanding workflows are operation/sales driven due to the industry relying on manufacturing.
Navigating a Competitive Professional World
The professional world is increasingly competitive - what’s your best advice for surviving and thriving in such an environment?
Keeping up-to-date with latest market trends as well as becoming a reflective practitioner.
How important is networking in the lighting industry, and what are the best ways to build meaningful professional connections?
Creating a good network within the lighting industry will greatly benefit anyone who wants longevity. Attending LIA events and joining relevant groups/committees will enable you to see peers/competitors outside of the working environment.
Leadership
Do you believe leadership is something you learn on the job, or would you recommend formal leadership courses?
It is definitely a combination of both. Having the theoretical understanding helps implement methods into practice.
What’s the best piece of leadership advice you’ve ever received, and how has it shaped your approach?
The best piece of leadership advice I’ve been given was from a former headteacher. To be an effective leader you must be a good coach and never stop learning. Learn and become really good at what you do, so you can then share this knowledge with others and move onto another role.
Future of the Industry
How do you see the lighting industry evolving over the next few years? What should businesses be prepared for?
There is an ageing workforce, and an influx of the new generation will challenge existing methodology of how a successful business should be run. Businesses should be ready for a different style of accomplishing tasks/work.
What roles do sustainability and technology play in shaping the future of the lighting industry?
The Lighting industry tends to be slower to adopt technology due to the current workforce. As the new workforce enters various roles technological advancements will naturally occur. Sustainability has already had a big impact in the lighting industry with the change from fluorescent to LED lights. Efficiencies have greatly improved from the inception of LED technology and now the regeneration of existing products is occurring.
