Getting into the Industry
Could you tell us how you first got into the lighting sector? What initially drew you to this industry?
I got into the lighting sector simply by chance, I had taken a few different paths to find the career I wanted to take and hadn’t quite felt where I belonged, saw the opportunity for an apprenticeship in accounts with The LIA so thought why not, I got the job and haven’t looked back!
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced early in your career, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges I faced early in my career was understanding the technical aspects of the industry, personally I am not technically inclined so getting to grips with this took and still is taking some time.
Looking back, would you have done anything differently in your journey into the lighting sector?
When I took the opportunity to join the lighting sector, I had no idea just how large and complex it was, so I would’ve really delved into the industry as a whole to gain understanding prior to being in position. I was learning accounts as well as getting to grips with the industry which at times became overwhelming.

Why would you recommend the lighting industry to those considering a career in it?
I would personally recommend considering a career in the lighting sector because, the opportunities within the sector are endless, offering diverse career paths, from accounts to technical leads to lighting designers and marketing.
What makes this sector unique compared to others, and what should newcomers be excited about?
The lighting sector is unique because it blends design, technology and functionality really giving opportunities for all and if you find yourself in an area of the sector you do not find works for you, there are many pathways you can take whilst staying in lighting.
Advice for Those Starting Out
What advice would you give to someone just starting their career in lighting or a related field?
Do not let the complexity of the industry put you off and embrace continuous learning, the industry is constantly evolving with new technologies and design trends.
Are there any specific skills or knowledge areas that you think are crucial for success in this industry?
Perseverance is something I would say is the best skill you can have within in this industry as there are often many challenges such as tight deadlines, regulation changes and solution finding for certain customers perseverance is key.

The professional world is increasingly competitive - what’s your best advice for surviving and thriving in such an environment?
I would say, stay up to date with the industry, be open to learning opportunities and build strong connections with others in the industry, this will greatly support your future.
How important is networking in the lighting industry, and what are the best ways to build meaningful professional connections?
Networking in my opinion is possibly the most important aspect of the industry as it ensures you stay up to date with regulations, trends supports innovation with merging ideas and exploring new opportunities.

How do you see the lighting industry evolving over the next few years?
What should businesses be prepared for? Over the next few years, I see the industry becoming more innovative with smart lighting and energy efficiency with a focus on AI usage. Businesses should prepare for a growing demand of newer more innovative lighting solutions.
What roles do sustainability and technology play in shaping the future of the lighting industry?
Sustainability and technology are shaping the future of the industry, driving the demand of energy efficient lighting solutions, reducing carbon footprints and advancing smart lighting systems.
