CASE STUDY - The LIA Annual Lunch at Drapers Hall: Harrison Brown

Harrison Brown, a past finalist in The LIA’s University Project Brief, took his first steps into the lighting industry through Nottingham Trent University. His journey led him to attend The LIA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Annual Lunch—an event that brings together key industry leaders, innovators, and future talent.

For Harrison, this experience was more than just an introduction; it was an opportunity to immerse himself in the industry, connect with professionals, and gain firsthand insight into the sector’s dynamic landscape. In this case study, he shares his perspective on transitioning from academia to industry, what he learned from the event, and how it shaped his aspirations in lighting.

About You

What is your name, and which university did you graduate from?
Harrison Brown. I graduated from Nottingham Trent University in the summer of 2024

What was your project for the University Project Brief of the Year award?
My project for the ‘University Project Brief of the Year award’ was to “design a stylish Task/Mood lighting for the domestic or commercial market that resonates with considered Aesthetics, emphasis on elegance, quality details, considered tactility of materials, finishes and operation, for a luxury feel, for an under 50 professional audience.”

My final outcome was the Spirit Lamp, a thoughtfully designed lighting solution for individuals looking to create a more mindful living space. Inspired by biomimicry and the Japandi design aesthetic, the lamp features detachable lanterns that can be lifted from the central base and placed wirelessly around the room. This adaptable lighting system encourages interaction with physical spaces rather than digital screens, promoting a more relaxed and intentional atmosphere. Drawing inspiration from the seed pods of the Scandinavian fireweed, the lanterns float freely, transforming the lighting from a focused central glow to a soft, ambient spread throughout the room.

Experience at The LIA's Annual Lunch

How did you feel attending The LIA Annual Lunch as a finalist?
It felt like such a privilege to be in the venue. It was an exciting and rewarding experience. The recognition that I gained and the positive feedback gave me a massive boost in motivation. It was a great sense of validation in my design ability, and it inspired me to continue my creative journey with even more passion.

What was your impression of the event venue and the overall atmosphere?
The elegance of the venue really enhanced the overall experience. The atmosphere made the occasion memorable, and each conversation I had felt meaningful and important. As someone just starting out in the industry, being surrounded by such talented professionals really boosted my confidence. It made me realise that this
experience was something I had worked hard to earn, and it inspired me to continue pushing forward in my journey.

Were there any moments from the event that stood out to you?
One of my favourite moments was also the one I was most worried about. Showcasing my lamp to the industry professionals was daunting at first, but after spending months working on the design, I found that speaking about the lamp came naturally to me because I knew my project inside and out. The industry professionals were kind and inquisitive. Even though they were highly regarded in their fields, they were still very down to earth and easy to chat with.

Networking & Industry Engagement

How did you find networking with professionals in the lighting industry?
At first I found it very daunting, these people were obviously professionals, and I was concerned that my lack of experience would be evident. After speaking face to face with them, I was far more relaxed. These people were all in my position at one point, and sharing my story became easier the more people I spoke to.

Did you make any connections that could help in your career development?
While I didn’t make any direct connections at the event, it was still an invaluable experience. Being surrounded by industry professionals and hearing their insights gave me plenty of inspiration and ideas for my own career development in the future.

Were there any particular conversations that left a strong impact on you?
One conversation that really stood out to me was with Andy Hughes. He was incredibly down to earth and took the time to ask thoughtful questions about my lamp design. His genuine interest made me feel valued, and it was clear he cared about what I had to say. Even though he might not remember our chat, it left a lasting impact on me. Later in the event, he was awarded The President’s Award for his dedication and contributions to the lighting sector, which really highlighted the kind of professional I strive to be: someone who listens, engages, and genuinely invests in the growth of others.

Key Takeaways

What was the most valuable insight you gained from attending the event?
The event showed me that success in the industry isn’t just about technical skills. It’s also about how you engage with others, stay open to learning, and contribute to the wider community.

Did the experience change or reinforce your perception of the lighting industry?
My perception of the lighting industry was greatly changed by participating in the event. My initial impression was that the industry was somewhat exclusive and intimidating, but after meeting so many professionals, I realised that behind the polished surface, there was a community of genuine, compassionate individuals, with a shared desire to help the lighting industry grow and flourish.

Career Aspirations

Following the event, are you more interested in pursuing a career in the lighting industry? Why or why not?
Yes, following the event, I’m definitely more interested in pursuing a career in the lighting industry. Meeting so many passionate and supportive professionals made me realise how much potential there is to grow, and I’m excited to explore where this career path could take me.

If yes, what areas of the industry interest you the most?
As a recent graduate in product design, I am passionate about creating solutions that are both innovative and responsible. Within the lighting industry, I am most interested in contributing to the development of new ideas that not only address both current challenges and future needs, but also enhance the functionality and overall experience of everyday spaces.

Would you be interested in further engagement with The LIA, such as mentorship, training, or job opportunities?
Yes, I would be very interested in further engagement with The LIA, whether through mentorship, training, or job opportunities. I believe it would be a great way to continue learning and grow within the industry.

Final Thoughts

What advice would you give to future university students considering participating in the University Project Brief of the Year award?
Choosing the lighting brief over other product or furniture design projects offers a distinct advantage in understanding how design can transform a space beyond just functionality. Unlike most products or furniture, lighting directly influences the mood, atmosphere, and even the flow of a room. Designing lighting offers the chance to work with a product that not only serves a practical purpose, but also enhances the overall experience of its environment. By focusing on lighting, you learn to design for both form and function in a way that directly impacts how people interact with their surroundings.
