Q&A with the LIA Alpine Ski Challenge Fundraiser – Peter Hunt
Peter Hunt, Chief Operating Officer of the LIA has taken his enthusiasm for skiing to a challenging level by teaming up with his colleague Steve Davie and Simon Cook for over 180km of GPS tracked skiing on the Alpine slopes in 24 hours.
The team is raising money for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) Charity which helps to create a better future for seriously ill children.
Before heading off to the slopes for the Challenge on 24 January, Peter shares his love for skiing and the motivation behind the fundraising challenge.
What was the motivation behind the challenge?
Supporting a great cause and age denial!
I’ve skied for 40 years and love the mountains, exercise, fresh air and gluhwein!
I love skiing and being in the mountains, where you can get a wonderful sense of freedom being close to the elements up in the open mountains.
Skiing lifts the spirit with the feeling of excitement as the wind moves across your face at speed.
Why have you chosen the Great Ormond Street Hospitals Charity?
The LIA has supported this charity for a while now and we are continuing to do so through the Challenge. Stories of visits to the hospital by our President and Council members are heart-breaking to hear. Children deserve every chance in life and we hope that our contribution will go some way towards making that happen.
How much are you hoping to raise for the charity?
As much as possible. There are lots of demands on people to donate to this charity, but I will be pleased to raise any amount.
Have you had any experience of doing something similar?
Yes, we did a similar challenge 3 years ago, after which I said that I would never do it again!
How are you preparing for the challenge?
Long walks, training at the gym and a dry January.
What are the main difficulties or obstacles for you in your preparations?
Age- I’m 63 and should know better.
What will you advise someone looking to do the challenge?
The ski challenge is all about strategy, stamina, teamwork but most of it all you must have fun doing it.
You can help Peter beat the amount he raised on his last challenge by donating to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity on the JustGiving page set up for the LIA Alpine Ski Challenge at the link.
