Technical Documentation

The LIA has a wealth of resources dedicated to the lighting industry. We provide access to technical information for our members on everything from legislation and legislative guidance to technical details on National, European, and International standards and procedures.

LIA members have access to a vast catalogue of standards and technical documents.

STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT

The LIA is deeply involved in numerous standards development organisations, including IEC, ISO, CENELEC, CEN, and BSI.

The LIA’s engagement in various lighting industry standards committees provides its members with early access to information on developing standards. This strategic advantage enables members to design products that comply with emerging regulations and remain future-proof.

By participating in the LIA, members also gain the opportunity to influence the drafting of these standards. Their input helps shape industry regulations to better align with their specific needs and expertise.

New in 2024

  • 2024 should see the publication of both the controlgear safety series standards, IEC 61347 and the new format luminaire safety standard IEC 60598-1. These will then progress through the EU harmonisation process to be listed in the OJ. These standards will become the default for showing a presumption of conformity to EU and GB Regulations.
  • For luminaires, work will move to updating the part 2s to align with the new format IEC 60598-1.
  • Work will ramp up in the environmental group as pressure for standardised metrics increases including publishing the PEP Ecopassport PSR0014 as an IEC Publicly Available Specification (PAS) late 2024 or early 2025.
  • 3 major projects on LED lamp safety, LED module safety and LED light source performance standards should progress to final drafts later in the year and publication in 2025..
  • Standards IEC 63494-1 and IEC 63494-2-1 for Lighting System Electro-Mechanical Interfaces are in the Committee Draft stage, with the the work progressing during 2024/2025, with estimated publication early 2026.

2023 Achievements

  • Work has restarted on LED light source safety and performance standards.
  • Work has commenced on a new series of standards for “holders, connectors and mounts for LED light sources”.
  • Work concluded on updating the controlgear safety standards IEC 61347-1 and some part 2s which are expected to be published in 2024.
  • Work has continued on updating the luminaire safety standard IEC 60598-1 which is expected to be published in 2024.
  • Work on environmental aspects has started with development of a Technical Report expected in 2024. This group will also look to develop Product Category Rules (PCR) and Product Specific Rules (PSR) for lighting.
  • In CENELEC the approval of standards as harmonised standards and listing in the Commission Official Journal (OJ) continues to cause frustration and delays.
